Hashimoto Hirohide was a Western-style painter known for highly refined landscapes with his exceptional drawing ability, with emphasis on orthodox techniques of oil painting. Born in Gifu Prefecture, he studied under Itō Ren at Tokyo University of the Arts and moved to France in 1967 during a period of exploration at the age of 33. After exposing himself to French artistic traditions at Académie Julian and Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Hashimoto introduced a new vision in painting. On returning to Japan, he refrained from joining any existing group and instead, actively presented his works in solo as well as “Rei no Kai” and other group exhibitions. He was also active in arts education, having taught a new generation of painters at Asagaya College of Art and Design, Tokyo Zokei University, and Joshibi University of Art and Design.
Our museum held an exhibition called “Hashimoto Hirohide: Symphony of Color” in 2006, which showcased his mature works from the 1990s. This time around, we wish to show the process by which he devised and polished his style of painting beautifully resonating planes of color, through a selection of works immediately following his return from France in 1969 through the 1970s and the 1980s. The highlights of this exhibition include a number of fine and clear views of the beaches of Minamibōsō painted from life. We invite you to enjoy his works that depict beloved nostalgic sceneries of Japan and to feel light and breeze reflected in the clear colors.
