Etsuko Kawakubo, Professor of Nursing Department of Josai International University, encountered copperplate prints while studying at the College of Art at Nihon University. She was a copperplate engraver for about 20 years before pursuing her career in nursing. She has been expressing familiar motifs, such as flowers and grass in the garden and sisters of domestic cats, with a light touch of etching lines and aquatint surfaces, presenting her works at exhibitions of the Japan Print Association, CWAJ Print Shows and solo exhibitions. She says “I am more interested in what type of pictures I should draw rather than how I engrave the prints.” As her comment suggests, her works, which avoid pursuing the characteristics of copperplates prints by competing for density, appeal with their interestingly flat and simplified shapes, stretched lines with blurring and shades, and comfortable margins.
In this exhibition, we will display her works in the order of the year of production, starting with her early works, while also introducing every aspect of the activities that Professor Kawakubo engages in, as part of her other role as a copperplate engraver. Please enjoy viewing works from which you will feel gentle looks and a free atmosphere.
