>>Residency Card

Foreigners living in Japan are required to carry their Residency Card with them at all times. For details on this and other immigration issues, please check the English website of the Immigration Services Agency of Japan:

>>National Health Insurance System

a. All international students in Japan are required to sign up for the National Health Insurance (hereafter NHI).

 

The insurance fee is approximately 1,500 ~ 2,000 yen per month if you didn’t have an income from a part-time job in the previous year.The bill will be sent to your home address in Japan from your local city office. Please pay this immediately. You can pay it at convenience stores or post offices.

b. NHI is a universal health care system established from the Japanese government. You only need to cover 30% of the total cost of your treatment.

You’ll be automatically registered for the NHI system upon completing your resident registration at the city hall.

c. Signing up for NHI is mandatory. If you have overseas travel insurance, please check beforehand as to what is covered in Japan.

d. Dental treatment is also partially covered by the National Health Insurance.


>>University rules and regulations

Attendance

a. All international students are required to sign-in at the centers/office of your campus on a weekly basis for attendance check
(Every day you have a class at the Awa Campus). 

b. Hours of the Attendance Check are on every Monday – Saturday, 9:00-11:30 / 12:30-5:00.

c. You must bring your Student ID Card and Residency Card. Attendance will not be processed without them

d. Students without confirmed attendances up to 4 consecutive times will be reported to the Immigration Office. These students will be subject to a penalty which may result in deportation.

e. Students absent for more than 3 months will automatically have their student status cancelled, which will result in deportation.

f. Once you are deported by the Immigration Bureau, you will be refused entry to Japan for a minimum of 5 to 10 years.


Drinking on campus
Drinking on campus is not allowed. Please remember that the drinking age is Japan is 20.


>>Transportation and traffic rules and regulations

Cycling
a. Register your bicycle (at a bicycle store or police station)

b. It’s illegal to ride your bicycle on the right-hand side of the road. (30 days in prison or a 20,000 yen fine)

c. It’s illegal to hold an umbrella, use a cellular phone or carry passengers while cycling. (500,000 yen fine)

d. It’s illegal to wear earphones while cycling.

e. You must have a bicycle bell on your bicycle and use bicycle lights after dark.

f. Cycling side by side is not allowed.

g. Cycling under the influence of alcohol is strictly prohibited. (five years in prison and a 1,000,000 yen fine)

h. Cycling on pedestrian sidewalks is not allowed.


Trains
a. Make sure you pay the full train fare even when there is not a member of JR staff available to check tickets at the station.

b. Penalties for not buying a ticket: twice the fare (+500,000 yen fine)

c. You are not allowed to enter the train tracks.


JIU Shuttle Buses
a. Togane Campus—Shuttle buses available to and from the following locations: Tokyo, Yokohama, Kisarazu, Oami, Soga, Togane, Chiba, Nishi-Funabayashi, Naruto and Keisei Narita

b. Awa Campus—Shuttle bus service to Kisarazu.

Driving
Overseas students from our sister universities are not allowed to drive any motorized vehicle during their studies in Japan.


>>Part-time Work

a. International students can apply for a permit to have a part-time job at the Center for International Education.

b. Exchange students can apply for a part-time job as well. If you would like to apply, ask for a designated form at the Center, and ask for permission from your home university as well.

c. It is recommended that new students apply for this permit three months after enrollment at JIU (Matriculation Ceremony) in order to first adjust to the student life in Japan.

d. Please inform us of your employment information. 

e. You cannot work for more than 28 hours per week, 8 hours per day under the law by the Immigration Bureau. (If you are to work for several employers, please do not exceed these limits.) However, you can work for 8 hours per day during the long school holidays.

f. You may not work at places which are not authorized by the Immigration Bureau.

g. This permit allows you to work only while you are attending school. You cannot work with this permit after your graduation date.
