スペルマン大学は、米国ジョージア州アトランタにある世界最高峰のリベラルアーツ女子大学です。現在、そこの学生26名が本学の東金キャンパスを訪れています。このプログラムで学生は、4週間、日本語と日本文化を集中的に学びます。

また、成田や東京への日帰りの校外学習やアメリカ大使館への表敬訪問、さらには、キャンパスでの本学の学生との交流会などの課外活動にも参加する予定です。

5月14日に本学の学生がスペルマンの学生のためにキャンパスの案内を買って出ました。その途中、ローズガーデンで本学へいらしていた中国からの賓客、本学副学長、職員と写真を撮りました。

歓迎会は、本学のプレゼンテーションホールで行われ歓迎のスピーチやプログラムの紹介などが行われました。会場には、語学教育センター所長のウールステンクロフト教授をはじめ、教員、国際教育センターのスタッフが集まりました。また、ボランティアとして参加している本学の大学院生、学部生、留学生も同席していました。

米国では、既に夏休み期間中なのですが、本学のS１クオーターからS２クオーターに行われます。そのため、夏の匂いがする美しいキャンパスではありますが、本学の学生にとってはまだ夏は遠い感じとなります。

スペルマンカレッジの学生を対象としたこの集中プログラムは、言語と文化、文化体験の要素で構成されています。語学教育センターの日本語プログラムの教授陣が、毎日2コマ程度の日本語を担当しております。また、日本文化に関する講義は、オムニバス形式で実施され10名の教授陣が英語で講座を担当しております。このプログラムのために本学の教員やスタッフは、学生にためになり、かつ楽しい経験を提供するために尽力しています。

日本語のクラスは、ゼロスタートの全くの初心者対象のクラスと、日本語をアメリカで学習してきた学習者のためのクラスと２レベルで開講しております。また日本の文化の講座は、日本文化について日本文学、メディア文化、現代社会、ことわざ、文化的価値観、移民・統合政策など、さまざまなテーマを取り扱う興味深いオムニバスのコースとなっています。

スペルマン大学の学生は6月中旬まで本学で勉強する予定です。本学では、海外の教育機関の希望に合うようなプログラムを作成し提供しております。また、国際大学として、語学教育センターと国際センターは、海外の教育機関との関係構築のために日夜努力を重ねております。

Students of Spelman College (USA) study at JIU

Currently visiting Togane Campus are twenty-six students from Spelman College, a private, historically Black, women's liberal arts college in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. During their four-week stay at JIU, they will study Japanese language and culture. They will also participate in extra-curricular activities such as day trips to Narita and Tokyo, a tour of Togane, a visit to the US Embassy, and a meeting with JIU students on campus.

The students arrived on May 14 and were welcomed with a tour of the campus including a stop at the Rose Garden. In attendance was the Vice President, Professor Masato Kurabayashi, and several office staff.

A reception was held in the Presentation Hall, where the hospitality of the host university was emphasized with several speeches and presentations. Included in the gathering was Professor Woolstencroft, Director of the Center for Language Education (CLE), accompanied by other faculty members from the CLE and staff from the Center for International Education (CIE). Mingling among them were Japanese graduate and undergraduate students serving as volunteers.

Although the period of stay for the US students occurs during the summer vacation at Spelman College, it coincides with the first and second quarters of the spring term at JIU. As a result, the leafy grounds of Togane Campus serve as a lively backdrop for their studies while JIU students go about attending their own classes.

Language and culture are the two components of the curriculum designed for the Spelman College students. They study 2 or 3 Japanese lessons daily, taught by instructors from the Japanese Language Program of the CLE. This involves Professors Chiga Hayashi, Misao Kozuka, Megumi Onozato, Mitsugu Saito, Hiromi Sakamoto, Akiko Saito, Mari Takayanagi, and Sho Watanabe. On certain days they also take a lecture on Japanese culture taught by other instructors from the CLE, such as Professors Ben Adkins, Kevin Clark, Tricia Fermin, Angel Figueroa, Koichi Haga, Yasuhiro Omoto, and Tim Woolstencroft. Participating faculty as well as staff are working diligently to provide both an educational and entertaining experience for the visiting students.

While the Japanese language component is split into two streams to accommodate different levels of proficiency among the students -- some of whom are complete beginners -- the component on Japanese culture covers an array of topics, such as Japanese literature, media culture, modern society, proverbs and cultural values, as well as immigration and integration policies.

The visiting Spelman College students stay until mid-June. JIU is proud to be the host for this educational opportunity for overseas students. While the students improve their knowledge of Japan through its language and culture, the CIE and CLE represent JIU in demonstrating its vision for fostering ties with educational institutions abroad.
