On December 23rd, 19 students from Yuka Kawano's seminar in the Department of International Department of International Exchange Studies of Faculty of International Humanities and the voluntary volunteer group Noi held a Christmas social gathering at Chiba Togane Campus, inviting 10 children from the child support group "Manabisha Yousport" in Togane, Chiba Prefecture. At the social gathering, the students enjoyed games planned by the students and dinner prepared by volunteer cooks. In addition, the profits from the flea market held in November, totaling 42,460 yen, were donated to the group.

The flea market was held in conjunction with the JIU Festival on November 9th and 10th. Starting in October, boxes for collecting clothes, including fast fashion, and books were set up in three locations on campus, and flyers were distributed to students to encourage them to support the activity. As a result, a total of 585 items were collected: 342 pieces of clothing, 153 books, and 90 accessories. Prices were set at reasonable levels at the flea market on the day, so students and local residents alike purchased items, and the event ended with great success, raising sales of 42,460 yen.

As a Christmas present for the children, the students made homemade ginger cookies using leftover ginger that was to be discarded after being used in a limited-time Menu provided by ZOZOSTUDIO (Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture).
Kokoro Miyashita (3rd year, Department of International Exchange Studies Faculty of International Humanities), head of Kawano's seminar, said, "We were able to create value from nothing by recycling leftover ginger and items that would otherwise be thrown away, such as fast fashion. We would be happy if we could contribute even a little to organizations that regularly carry out volunteer work."

Kawano's seminar has been carrying out many activities related to the SDGs, and the flea market is part of an initiative with the theme of "responsible consumption and production." In addition, Professor Kawano serves as an advisor to the voluntary volunteer circle Noi, which is developing various volunteer activities related to international cooperation and the SDGs that university students can easily participate in.

"Gakubishya Yousport" is an organization that provides study support, meals, and a place to stay for elementary and junior high school students in Togane City, and has been active since 2017. Professor Kawano has been sending student volunteers to the organization to continue supporting the children.
