On July 8th, the opening ceremony of the Asia Summer Program 2024 was held at Dongseo University (Republic of Korea) with approximately 300 participating students. The program will last for approximately three weeks, until July 26th.
The Asia Summer Program (ASP) is an international exchange program where students from eight Asian countries study together, and has been held in rotation by five universities in Thailand, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Japan known as the Original Five (Bangkok University, East-West University, Josai University, Josai International University, Petra Christian University, and Universiti Malaysia Perlis) with the aim of promoting exchanges between Asian students. It has been held since 2013, and this is the third time it has been held at East-West University, and the 13th time for the program.
Prior to the opening ceremony, a meeting of the original five university University President was held. Professor Maria Shigemi Ichiyama, Vice Director of the Organization for Promoting International Collaboration, attended in place of University President Masato Kurabayashi, who was unable to attend due to official duties. At the meeting, University President reaffirmed the strength of the network of this collaborative program, which has not been broken even through the COVID-19 pandemic since the Asia Summer Program was established, and that with the growing importance of Asia in recent years, the best way to raise awareness of Asia's diversity and regional issues is through direct experience of foreign cultures and learning through specially designed courses, which has remained unchanged since the program's establishment. A video message from University President Kurabayashi was also introduced at the beginning of the meeting.
ASP is a great platform for achieving global human resource development. Through the experiences gained here, participating students will be able to connect with friends from all over the world, learn new perspectives, and develop creativity and a spirit of cooperation. Seven students from our university are participating, including three students from Department of International Exchange Studies Faculty of International Humanities and four students from Department of Tourism Faculty of Tourism.
Participating students will select and take two courses per day. All programs in the ASP will be taught in English by lecturers from participating universities. Visiting Associate Professor Kiss-Csapo Gergey and Assistant Professor Nagy Anita from the Department Faculty of International Humanities, Department of International Exchange Studies, will be giving a lecture on "Hungarian Culture and History."
I hope that they will work hard together with the other students from each country and make use of what they have learned in their future lives.
