We develop pharmacists who can respond to a changing society, discover problems, and solve them.

Dean Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Eriko Kobayashi (Professor of Social Pharmacy)

Hello to everyone who aspires to become a pharmacist. At Josai International University Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, we aim to train pharmacists who can respond to a changing society, discover problems, and solve them.

Looking back, it is still fresh in our memories that medical professionals, including pharmacists, continued to provide medical care in a tough situation where the previous medical common sense was no longer applicable under the COVID-19 pandemic that suddenly began in 2020. Since then, international exchange has resumed, and the number of foreign tourists visiting Japan in 2024 exceeded 36 million, the highest number ever. Naturally, we have entered a society where medical care is provided to the rapidly increasing number of foreign patients, beyond the barriers of language and culture. In addition, the digitalization of medical care, including the centralization of medical information such as electronic prescriptions, treatment apps, and electronic medicine notebooks, is also progressing at an unprecedented speed. The six-year Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Pharmacy is a faculty that trains pharmacists, but in order to cultivate pharmacists who can discover and solve problems in such a rapidly changing society, our university develops education centered on "international competence" and "regional collaboration".

- International competence: Is it enough to provide medical care in English to accommodate foreign patients? Different languages mean different medical cultures. Our Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences offers learning experiences that allow students to consider the role of medical care and pharmacists in foreign languages and cultures, with teachers who hold foreign pharmacist licenses and have work experience as pharmacists abroad. In addition, students are constantly exposed to international learning on our multicultural campus, and they develop international competence through learning experiences in collaboration with foreign universities, such as training at the University of Alberta in Canada from the early years and graduation Research at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand in the upper years.

- Community collaboration: In April 2025, our university opened a donation course called "Community Medical Pharmacy" at the university, donated by Chiba Co., Ltd., which operates Yaks Drug mainly in Chiba Prefecture. In order to provide medical care to the local community as well as to provide initiatives to promote the health of the local community, students will deepen their knowledge of community medicine from the early years and will be provided with the learning experience of pharmacists rooted in community medicine. In addition, we also provide learning experiences such as an olive production support project in collaboration with Togane City and the industrial sector.

- Interprofessional Collaboration Our university has training courses for physical therapists, nurses, and care workers. Through the experience of studying with students aiming for these professions, students will experience learning about interprofessional collaboration in the medical field.

In this way, our Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences will nurture pharmacists who can respond to a changing society and discover and solve problems, while at the same time growing and evolving together with our students. The "power" needed to respond to a changing society will also change with the times. International power, regional cooperation power, and what's the next power? We would like to think about the next power together with you. All faculty and staff Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences look forward to welcoming all of you who aim to become pharmacists of the future.
