城西国際大学理学療法学科の義肢装具教育｜3年生がÖssurとパラリンピアンから切断者リハビリテーション・筋電義手を学ぶ

城西国際大学 理学療法学科では、3年次の「義肢装具学実習」において、切断者のリハビリテーションや義肢・装具について、専門家や義肢使用者から直接学ぶ機会を設けています。

2025年7月11日、水田記念ホールにおいて、理学療法学科3年生を対象とした「義肢装具学実習」の特別講演会を開催しました。

今回は、アイスランドに本社を置く義肢・装具メーカーÖssur（オズール）の日本法人であるオズールジャパン合同会社から、代表取締役社長で義肢装具士でもある楡木祥子氏を講師として招きました。

さらに、リオデジャネイロ・パラリンピック陸上女子400mで銅メダルを獲得した辻沙絵選手にも登壇いただき、義肢を使用する当事者・アスリートの視点から話を伺いました。

義肢装具士から義肢開発と切断者支援を学ぶ

楡木氏からは、Össurが取り組む義肢開発や、切断者の生活・活動を支える義肢装具について紹介いただきました。

義肢は、失われた身体機能を補うだけではなく、使用する人の生活、仕事、スポーツなど、それぞれの目標に応じて選択・調整していく必要があります。

学生は、義肢そのものの構造や技術だけではなく、切断後のリハビリテーションにおいて、理学療法士と義肢装具士がどのように連携するのかについても学びました。

パラリンピアンから「義肢を使う人」の視点を学ぶ

特別講師として登壇した辻沙絵選手からは、競技生活や義肢との関わりについて、自身の経験をもとにお話しいただきました。

理学療法士が義肢を学ぶ際には、機器の構造や身体機能だけではなく、実際に義肢を使用する人がどのような生活を送り、何を求めているのかを理解することも重要です。

学生にとって、専門職から義肢を学ぶだけでなく、当事者・アスリート本人の経験を直接聞く機会となりました。

学生が「筋電義手」を実際に体験

講演後には、筋肉から生じる電気信号を利用して手指を動かす筋電義手を用いたハンズオンセミナーを実施しました。

学生自身が実際に機器に触れ、操作を体験することで、講義だけでは理解しにくい筋電義手の仕組みや操作感について学びました。

理学療法士は義肢を製作する職種ではありませんが、切断後のリハビリテーションでは、筋力、関節可動域、歩行や動作能力を評価し、義肢装具士や医師などと連携しながら、義肢を使用した生活や活動を支援する役割を担います。

「技術」「当事者」「多職種連携」から義肢装具を学ぶ

今回の特別講演では、

義肢装具士による専門的な技術・臨床の視点、義肢を使用するアスリートの当事者視点、学生自身による筋電義手の体験

という複数の側面から、義肢と切断者リハビリテーションについて学びました。

教科書で義肢の種類や構造を学ぶだけでなく、実際の製品、専門職、義肢使用者に触れることで、義肢を使用する人を理学療法士としてどのように支援するのかを考える実習となりました。

城西国際大学理学療法学科では、3年次の義肢装具学実習において、義肢装具の専門家や義肢使用者を招いた実践的な教育を行っています。

義肢の構造や適合に関する知識だけでなく、切断者の身体機能、生活、スポーツ、多職種連携などを含め、義肢を使用する人を総合的に支援するための理学療法について学びます。

また、海外に拠点を持つ企業や海外の理学療法士などから学ぶ機会を設けることで、国内だけでなく、世界で用いられている義肢技術やリハビリテーションについて知る機会にもつなげています。

今後も本学科では、専門職、臨床現場、当事者との接点を取り入れながら、理学療法士に必要となる専門知識と実践的な視点を学ぶ教育を進めていきます。

The Evolution of Rehabilitation and Prosthetics for Amputees (Össur: Iceland)

Special Lecture for Prosthetics and Orthotics Practice on July 11

On July 11, 2025, a special in-person lecture was held at the Mizuta Memorial Hall for third-year students of the Department of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Social Work Studies at Josai International University. This event was part of their "Prosthetics and Orthotics Practice" course. Our department invites experts in this field every year to cultivate future professionals capable of providing advanced post-amputation rehabilitation.

On the day of the event, we welcomed Ms. Shoko Niregi, President of Össur Japan G.K., the Japanese subsidiary of Össur, a global leader in prosthetics and orthotics. Ms. Niregi, who is also a certified prosthetist and orthotist, spoke about the company's philosophy, which is rooted in the progressive society of Iceland where its headquarters is located—a country that has long ranked first in the Gender Gap Index. She also discussed the latest advancements in prosthetic development.

Additionally, we were honored to have Ms. Sae Tsuji, a bronze medalist in the women's 400m track and field event at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics, as a special guest speaker. The students listened intently as Ms. Tsuji, who was born with an upper limb deficiency and now competes as an athlete with a prosthetic arm, shared her powerful, real-life experiences.

Following the lectures, a hands-on seminar was held where students had the opportunity to try on a "myoelectric prosthetic hand," which operates by reading the electrical signals from muscles. It was a valuable opportunity for them to experience cutting-edge technology firsthand.

This special event provided an excellent opportunity to deeply learn about prosthetics and rehabilitation from multiple perspectives: cutting-edge "technology," the "user's perspective" of an athlete, and the "social context" that fosters innovative companies. The Department of Physical Therapy at Josai International University's Faculty of Social Work Studies will continue to engage in education that broadens students' expertise and perspectives through such practical learning experiences.
