スペルマン大学の学生を対象とした本学のサマープログラムは、2023年6月8日に語学教育センター（以下CLE）でお別れ会を行い、４週間のプログラムを無事終了しました。このプログラムは、４週間に渡って日本語と日本文化を学び、さらに学内、学外で様々な文化体験をするというもので、今回は、本学の姉妹校のスペルマン大学の学生26名が参加しました。スペルマン大学は、米国ジョージア州アトランタにある全米でも有数の歴史のある女性のための大学です。

お別れ会の前に行われた閉会式には、学長である杉林教授、プログラムディレクターの市山教授（国際人文学部長）、語学教育センター長のウールステンクロフト准教授が出席しました。また、本プログラムの運営に協力した尾本准教授が式典の司会を務めました。閉会式には、JIUの学生ボランティアや国際センターの職員も参加しました。また、プログラムの企画に尽力した国際センター職員の秋本氏、また、日本語教育を担当した講師や日本文化について講義を行ったCLEの教員も出席しました。

セレモニーでは、杉林学長、市山教授による祝辞が述べられた後、修了証が交付されました。また、スペルマンの学生を代表してケニア・ハンドフィールドさんがプログラムに対して感謝のスピーチを行いました。全行程に同行したスペルマン大学の劉教授とキム教授からは、プログラムの成功に対してのJIUのスタッフ・教員への感謝、そして旅行中の模範的な行動などに対して学生への感謝の言葉がありました。

プログラム後半の２週間は、前半同様、盛り沢山の内容でした（こちらをご覧ください）。CLEの講師による日本語や文化の勉強に加え、東京の浅草や原宿への校外研修、着物の着付け体験、お茶、柔道体験などの文化活動などの活動を行いました。さらにスペルマン大学の学生は、JIUの日本人学生との交流会にも参加しました。

最終週のハイライトは、東京の米国大使館で行われたエマニュエル・ラーム駐日米国大使の歓迎を受けたレセプションでしょう。このレセプションには、シャノン・ドーシー文化担当官をはじめとする大使館職員や、日本の文部科学省の人々など、多くのゲストが出席していました。第二次世界大戦後、マッカーサー元帥が天皇陛下と会見したことでも知られる大広間で、日本とアメリカの人々が本学の教員、学生とスペルマン大学の教員、学生と交流できたことは、実に良い経験でした。

前回、こちらでスペルマン大学のサマープログラムを行ってからコロナ禍のせいで、何年か間が空いてしまいました。ですので、今回このプログラムが無事に終了し、思い出深いものとなったことは、関係者にとって特に喜ばしいことでした。彼女らは閉会式の翌日に無事、帰国の途につきました。

CLEは、来年のスペルマンカレッジの学生を受け入れることを楽しみにしています。また、そのほかにもこれから多くの国際交流プロジェクトが予定されております。

Spelman College students complete their studies at JIU

The JIU Summer Program for Spelman College students ended successfully with a closing ceremony and a reception at the Center for Language Education (CLE) on June 8, 2023. This was the culmination of 4 weeks studying Japanese language and culture -- with several extra-curricular activities -- for 26 students from the historically Black, liberal arts college based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

In attendance for the closing ceremony were University President Kenji Sugibayashi, the program director Professor Shiguemi Ichiyama (Dean, Faculty of International Humanities), and the CLE Director Tim Woolstencroft. Professor Yasuhiro Yomoto, who helped manage the program, was the Master of Ceremonies. They were joined by JIU student volunteers and several office staff from the Office of International Affairs, among them Shunsuke Akimoto, who was instrumental in planning the program. Also present were the Japanese language instructors and the international faculty from the CLE who had given lectures on Japanese culture.

Key moments of the ceremony were the congratulatory remarks by JIU representatives, in particular Professor Ichiyama, and a speech of gratitude by Kenya Handfield on behalf of all the Spelman students. Spelman Professors Xuexin Liu and Naomi Kim, who accompanied the students for the entire trip, also showed their appreciation to JIU staff and faculty for a successful program as well as to students for their exemplary conduct and motivation during the trip.

The latter half of the program was just as eventful as the first two weeks (as reported here). In addition to further studies of language and culture with CLE instructors, students were involved in sightseeing trips to Asakusa and Harajuku in Tokyo, and in cultural activities such as wearing kimono and participating in a tea ceremony. They also interacted in social gatherings with Japanese students of JIU.

Perhaps the highlight of the final week was a reception held at the US Embassy in Tokyo where students were received by US Ambassador to Japan Emanuel Rahm. The reception included several other guests in attendance, such as the Cultural Attaché, Shannon Dorsey, and other Embassy staff, as well as representatives from the Japan Ministry of Education. It was certainly a fine experience for the JIU/Spelman delegation to mingle with them in the Great Hall, a setting noted in history as where US General MacArthur met Emperor Hirohito after the end of World War Two.

It had been several years since Spelman College students last came to study at JIU due to the recent pandemic, and it was a pleasant relief for all involved that their return to Japan was successful and memorable. They departed for home on the day after the closing ceremony.

The CLE looks forward to hosting next year’s group of Spelman College students and also to planning many other international exchange projects before then.
