「Indigo Blue Ocean by Leki x Occy -

Former JIU students return to campus for a joint exhibition of their indigo art and crafts

Two JIU graduates and former students of the Faculty of International Humanities collaborated on a joint exhibition at the Mizuta Museum of Art on Togane campus.

“Indigo Blue Ocean by Leki x Occy — Connecting the World with Indigo and the Sea” detailed their work with indigo dyes producing artwork and crafts related to the sea and a surfing lifestyle.

When Maeshiro Okikazu (‘Occy’) and Leki Nagahara were enrolled as JIU students, both were active members of the surfing club and studied English through the CLE. They emphasized that their time at JIU and the CLE helped their transformation into the artists and craftsmen that they are today. Maeshiro Okikazu explained that interaction with his teachers and fellow students at the time helped broaden his horizons. Leki Nagahara explained that his experience with the CLE helped prepare him for his future travels to the United States, Australia, and other countries.

Not only do they share fond memories of student life at JIU, but also a strong connection to their art, community, and work philosophy. Okinawa is home for Maeshiro Okikazu, while Tokushima is home for Leki Nagahara. They both traveled to Chiba for the opening of the exhibition on Oct 7, where they met with former advisors and with Professor Ichiyama. Maeshiro Okikazu stayed for the duration of the exhibition until Oct 28, as he interacted with visitors and demonstrated his skills while working on a loom that was set up in the central part of the exhibition area.

The exhibition was partly initiated by Professor Hisayoshi Tajima and supported by the artists’ former English instructor, Professor Maria Shiguemi Ichiyama, Dean of International Humanities and former Director of the CLE.
