皆さん、こんにちは。私は、ケニア・ハンドフィールドと申します。よろしくお願い致します。私は、フロリダ州のマイアミの出身です。現在は、ジョージア州、アトランタの黒人学生のための優れた教育機関であるスペルマン大学に通っております。私は、心理学を専攻し、副専攻として、フランス語を選択しています。また、法学部進学コースに所属しております。

2023年スペルマンサマープログラムの教員の方々、学生を代表して皆様の寛大なご支援、並びにご信頼に感謝申し上げます。さて、私は、旅は指導者を育成すると教えられてきました。海外留学は、理論とそれを実践する能力が問われます。留学は、偏見などをなくし生涯忘れられない体験と思い出を作ってくれます。それと同時に、独特で、革新的な知識の場である重要なつながりを作り上げてくれます。

スペルマン大学は、この世界をよくするための選択をすることに誇りを持っています。しかし、世界を見たことがない状態でそれをすることの難しさも認識しています。だからこそ、これからさらに20年以上先まで続くことを願っているこのJIUとのパートナーシップは非常に重要なのです。このパートナーシップは、私たちにとって極めて重要で、教育の手段でもあります。そして、無知、偏見を打破することができる唯一の手段は、教育なのです。そして、私たちのようないわば、自分たちの祖先の土地から遠く離れて生活することを余儀なくされた人々にとってこれは、前人が作り上げさらに将来、来るであろう人のために私たちがつくる共通の場でもあるのです。

ほとんどの学生にとって、この留学は、これから海外と関わる機会の最初のものでした。朝7時半に起きて求名行きの電車に乗り、1時間目の直前に図書館の横のカフェスペースで予習・復習をしました。また、週末の東京研修に出かけたり、ドレイクの歌を歌ったり、公園でピクニックをしたりしました。このような小さなイベントの一つ一つが体験学習となり、私たちが愛する大学と国のための親善大使のような役割を果たすことができたわけです。

私たちは、将来において、自分たちも、公平で優れた変革者として人々の生活に影響を与えたいと考えております。私たちは、皆様からの経済的支援だけでなく、ここ城西国際大学で皆様との共同生活を主催してくださったこと、そしてそれを快く引き受けてくださったことに心から感謝しております。スタッフの皆さん、諸先生方、この夏を共に過ごしていただきありがとうございました。そして学生の皆さん、私たちに素晴らしい経験をさせてくださってありがとうございました。日本の生活をよりよく理解し国際的な視野を身につけるための灯火を皆さんたちは、与えてくださっています。

私たちがこの旅を通して知識を得続けている間、スペルマン大学の、あえて言わせていただければ、優れた学生さんと同じく、皆さんが思考、空間、時間において多様性を、より多くの方法で実現することを願ってやみません。

私たちも、最先端のがん研究から芸術のダイナミックなパフォーマンスまで、意識的に、情熱的に、心を込めて、リアルタイムで世界を良い方向へ変えられるように努力したいと考えています。ぜひスペルマンを訪れてください。そして、私たちが皆様をお迎えすることで恩返しをさせていただければと思います。ありがとうございました。

Spelman College student Kenya Handfield's closing speech at the 2023 Summer Program

Below is the transcript of the speech given by Spelman College student Kenya Handfield at the closing ceremony of the Summer Program 2023. (This is the third of three news items on the Summer Program at JIU for Spelman College students; for information on their four-week stay studying Japanese language and culture, please read News Item 1 and News Item 2)

"Greetings! I am Kenya Handfield, a third-year Psychology major French minor on the Pre-law track from Miami, Florida attending thee number one institution for Black excellence, Spelman College, located in Atlanta, Georgia.

On behalf of Spelman College and, more specifically the faculty and students of the 2023 Japan Summer Study Abroad Program, we say thank you for your generous support and belief in our program. I've been taught that travel awakens leaders. Studying abroad takes theory and actualizes ability. It dispels harmful narratives, creating life time experiences and memories while forging unique spaces for critical connection, innovation, and intellect.

At Spelman, we pride ourselves on making choices to change the world, but we recognize the difficulty in doing so when you've never seen said world. That's why this partnership, which we hope will span another 20 plus years into the future, is so essential -- it is a vehicle of education, and the only enemy to ignorance is education. This endeavor isn't just crucial for us, it is a beacon of ability and reality for the shared spaces we as a diasporic people will enter, and that the next generation will tread because the path has been curated for us and by us.

For so many of us, this has been our first of many opportunities to engage in foreign affairs. From waking up at 7:30 to catch the train to Gumyo and doing preview/review sheets in the library cafe right before first period to taking weekend trips to Tokyo, singing Drake, and picnicking in parks, each leg of this excursion has been a learning experience as we continue to serve as ambassadors of our beloved institution and our country.

We cannot wait to continue impacting lives as change agents, optimizing equity and excellence as we strive. We are extremely appreciative of not just your financial support, but for your gracious invitation to host community with you here at Josai International University. To the staff and senseis, thank you for spending your summer with us. To the students, thank you for taking us and showing us a GREAT time. You continue to fuel the fire and drive we have to seek the global perspective in order to better understand the Japanese way of living as we internalize our own.

As we continue to gain knowledge through our travels, it is our hope that you will keep encouraging the diversity of thought, space, and time in more ways than one as you have with these, dare I say, gorgeous girls at Spelman. We, in turn, will do what we do best; make the choice to change the world, from cutting edge cancer research to dynamic performances in the arts, intentionally, passionately, wholeheartedly, and in real time. We hope that you will consider visiting us at Spelman and allow us to return the favor as we host you. Arigato gozaimashita, thank you."
